ISO 28001:2022 specifies requirements and guidance for organizations in the supply chain to develop and implement supply chain security management systems, assess security threats, and establish countermeasures to prevent security breaches.

ISO 28001 is relevant for freight forwarders, logistics providers, shipping companies, port operators, warehousing companies, customs brokers, manufacturers with complex supply chains, and any organization involved in international trade.

ISO 28001 is aligned with the World Customs Organization (WCO) SAFE Framework and is recognized by C-TPAT (US) and AEO (EU) authorized economic operator programs, providing a pathway to customs facilitation benefits.

ISO 28001 addresses threats including cargo theft, smuggling, terrorism, tampering, counterfeiting, unauthorized access to transport modes and facilities, and information security within the supply chain.

ISO 28001 is complementary to the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. For maritime supply chains, ISO 28001 provides a broader land-based supply chain security framework that integrates with port and vessel security requirements.
